COLCHESTER United interim head coach Hayden Mullins insists they will strive to take maximum points from their final two games of the season – regardless of what happens tonight.

The U’s will move a step closer to seeing their League Two status finally confirmed if Grimsby Town fail to win their game in hand at play-off chasing Exeter City.

Colchester, who lost 1-0 at leaders Cheltenham Town last weekend, are on the brink of safety and lie six points above the relegation zone with two games remaining – Salford City at home on Saturday followed by a trip to Tranmere Rovers, on the final day of the season.

But U’s interim head coach Mullins says whatever happens elsewhere, they will be going all out to secure maximum points in their remaining matches.

Mullins said: “We've spoken about trying to look after ourselves.

“That’s the only thing we’re looking at and none of the talk is about any other team.

“We’re professional and we’ll definitely be going for maximum points in the next two games, whether we’re safe or not, to try and see the season out.

“If we are safe by next weekend, it will still mean something to these lads.

“There’ll be a lot of lads here who will get game time under their belts and that’s what we’re going to do.

“The result (at Cheltenham) is the result and Tis (Paul Tisdale) has spoken about ups and downs and lows and highs and there is, in football.

“We had beaten Southend on the Tuesday and we’re on a massive high then we get beat (at Cheltenham) in the last ten minutes or so and we’re on a low.

“It was a lapse in concentration and we got a bit anxious towards the end.

“We’re almost there and for them to score right at the end, it just showed the anxiety a little bit near the end with our clearances and some of our bits when we got on the ball.

“We need to be a bit calmer under pressure, on the ball.”

Mullins will be hoping Jevani Brown and Courtney Senior will be available again for the game against Salford City, this weekend.

The attacking duo missed the U’s defeat at Cheltenham due to injury.

"The two of them picked up knocks," said Mullins.

Meanwhile, Mullins has praised goalkeeper Shamal George, after he was selected in the League Two Team of the Week following his fine display at Cheltenham.

The former Liverpool keeper pulled off a string of fine saves at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium, on his first straight start for Colchester.

Mullins added: “Shamal is a good young goalkeeper.

“He’s still got bits to learn and I’m sure he will do but he had a really good game.

“He didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.”
