In the Essex Senior Cup, Halstead Town overcame Witham Town in a penalty shoot-out.

The tie at Spa Road finished 2-2 after extra-time but Halstead prevailed 4-1 on spot-kicks.

Ray Turner, Terry Rayner, Liam Morley and Jimmy Pirie all converted their penalties for Halstead, while only Sam Taylor converted for Witham.

Witham had taken a 17th minute lead through John Watson, who scored from the spot after Tom Austin had fouled Taylor in the area.

Halstead’s recent injury woes continued when Hyun Lee was stretchered off and in the second half, Tom English hobbled off.

Witham debutant goalkeeper Tony Burton denied Sutton before Halstead equalised with 18 minutes to go.

Sutton beat three defenders, cut in from the right and hit the target with a left-foot drive.

The game went into extra-time and Witham thought they had won the tie when Niki Love netted from a goalmouth scramble.

But Morley levelled with a spectacular 30-yard volley, to set up the penalty shoot-out.
