BRAINTREE Town boss Steve Pitt blasted the penalty decision that led to his side suffering a painful 3-2 home defeat to Scunthorpe United.

The Iron were beaten in their latest National League game after conceding a stoppage-time penalty, after Cal Roberts won a controversial spot-kick and then converted it.

Roberts drove in from the right and went down in the area, resulting in play-off chasing Scunthorpe winning and scoring a penalty.

The result leaves Braintree three points adrift of safety, with seven games remaining.

Pitt told the Braintree Town YouTube channel: "The penalty decision is an absolute disgrace.

"It's a foul in the build up, it's not a penalty either.

"In a game of fine margins let's get it right, we should have won the game, not take a point.

"That decision beggars belief.

"I don't know how he makes that decision, I don't know how he doesn't give a foul in the build-up and I don't know how he gives the penalty, I really don't.

"If I say anything more on the subject, I'm going to get myself in trouble.

"From our point of view, at 2-2 I think there's only going to be one winner and I think that's going to be us.

"We were the better side and anybody who witnessed that game, whether you're a Scunthorpe fan, whether you're a neutral, whether you're a Braintree fan, we're the better side, without a shadow of a doubt.

"Went toe to toe with them and we were better than them.

Danny Cowley: 'We’re just in a spell where we can’t find that goal'

"I'm disappointed in their two goals.

"Aidan gives the ball away unnecessarily in the build up to the first goal and the second goal, we've got done on the counter and done on the overload and that shouldn't happen.

"But we've got ourselves back in it and deservedly so and there should have been only one winner in that game and it should have been."

Braintree opened the scoring after just 49 seconds to open the scoring when a ball over the top from Ben Drake set John Akinde free and he slotted past the goalkeeper.

But Scunthorpe equalised in the 38th minute when Pat Jones' low cross was turned in by Leo Farrell.

Roberts hit a post for the Iron, while Louis Jones pulled off a superb save to keep out Akinde's deflected strike at the other end shortly afterwards.

Scunthorpe edged in front in the 58th minute through Oli Ewing's composed finish but Lewis Walker hauled Braintree level with a close-range finish three minutes later Roberts, who saw a free-kick come back off the crossbar, won and scored a last-gasp penalty to snatch the points.

Braintree are back in National League action on Tuesday night when they travel to play Brackley Town, kick-off 7.45pm.
