STEVE Pitt tore apart his Braintree Town team’s ‘absolutely woeful’ performance after they were consigned to a sobering 4-1 home defeat to Wealdstone, writes BEN MCCARTHY.

The Iron took the lead on 12 minutes after John Akinde converted a penalty that was won by a valiant Zavier Massiah-Edwards surge towards the box, from the right wing.

But the Royals responded four minutes later with Nathan Tshikuna clinically powering the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net, from the edge of the Braintree box.

Micah Obiero, before the half hour mark, prospered to give Wealdstone the lead, with the hosts failing to clear the ball.

Then, in the second half, he profited from a parried Mason Terry save to vanish any Iron hope, with a quarter of an hour left.

Braintree were cut open once more, in stoppage time, which ended with Matt Dibley-Dias putting the ball in his own net.

Colchester United fans have their say on Newport win

It sealed Wealdstone's first away league win in more than four months, marking the first time that the hosts had conceded four in a home National League match in seven years.

Although Braintree remain three points from safety, they have dropped behind a resurgent Morecambe in the table and have just three wins to show from their last 16 National League games, with their latest defeat marking a low point in manager Pitt’s reign at the club.

Pitt said: “That performance level is just not acceptable. I won’t tolerate that.

"That is, by a long distance in my time at the club, the worst performance level that I have seen. We played as though we couldn’t wait to get on the beach.”

Pitt’s only positive was the performance of Watford loanee Massiah-Edwards, who was consistently their biggest threat.

Of Massiah-Edwards' performance, Pitt added: “He worked his socks off and made things happen. He was the only player who emerged with any credit.

"He was the only shining light in an absolutely woeful performance.”

To make things worse for Braintree, skipper George Langston was forced off through a bruised foot, with Pitt saying that at least a two-game absence is likely for his most capped player this season.

But of his side’s survival hopes, Pitt agreed that it is now or never, adding: “We’ve reached an impasse now. We’ve had three massive games in the last week.

"We deserved the win against Truro; we didn’t take our chances at Gateshead. But today, that’s just not acceptable. That’s not my team.”
