SAMUEL Campbell is full of joy after successfully passing his Third Dan Level Black Belt at the first attempt.

The Stock Shotokan Karate Club member made the trip to the University of Bath Sporting Village as the Karate Union of Great Britain held its Special Dan Grade course and grading.

Campbell - who has been training at the Thundersley-based Stock Shotokan since 2004 - excelled and instructor Sensei Adam Purkiss, a Fifth Dan, was full of praise for the 21-year-old.

Purkiss said: “Samuel always gives 100 per cent every lesson and his commitment has paid off.

“He has now become the seventh student to pass Third Dan at Stock Shotokan Karate Club.”

Campbell first had to endure a gruelling two-hour lesson before the exam began, which lasted another two-and-a-half hours.

The talented Stock Shotokan member was tested on his basics, kata and kumite skills.

And Campbell was put to the test by the Karate Union of Great Britain’s chief instructor Sensei Andy Sherry - a Ninth Dan - along with senior instructors Bob Poynton and Frank Brennan - who are both Eighth Dans.
