Colchester United recorded back-to-back wins in League Two for the first time this season after winning 1-0 at Morecambe this afternoon.

Courtney Senior's superbly-executed goal scored just before half-time was enough to secure the U's all three points at the Globe Arena and boost their promotion hopes.

Colchester has to defend for large periods of the second half but they did well to keep the hosts at bay and record their first-ever league win over Morecambe.

Colchester head coach John McGreal made one change to his starting line-up for their game at Morecambe.

Sammie Szmodics missed the game after picking up an injury in training, so Frankie Kent came back into the side.

That resulted in a formation change for Colchester, who switched to three at the back with wing-backs.

Colchester enjoyed more of the possession in the first half – but had to wait until just before the break in order to take the lead.

The U’s went close in the third minute when Harry Pell’s diving header from Ryan Jackson’s cross flew wide of the post.

And two minutes later, Kane Vincent-Young's effort from the edge of the area flashed over the bar after good build-up by the U's.

But Morecambe keeper Barry Roche was not seriously tested after that, until the final seconds of the half.

The hosts threatened spasmodically, with Kent making a fine challenge on Vadaine Oliver in the area to deny the Morecambe striker.

However, Colchester made the breakthrough just before half-time thanks to a superbly well-worked goal.

Courtney Senior was at the centre of some fine attacking play, exchanging passes with Ryan Jackson and then Pell before slotting the ball low past Roche for a excellent goal.

It was the winger’s third goal of the season and set Colchester up nicely for the second half.

Morecambe started brightly after the interval and the U's survived a penalty appeal when the hosts felt that Jackson had controlled Zak Mills' cross with his hand in the area.

But at the other end, only some good defending by Josef Yarney at the far post denied Norris what looked a certain goal after Jackson had crossed deep from the right.

Morecambe went in search of an equaliser and almost got one just after the hour when Oliver headed against the bar from close range after A-Jay Leitch-Smith's cross from the right.

Jordan Cranston's 25-yard effort flew just over the bar with 18 minutes remaining, before the U's made their first change of the game with Aaron Collins sent on for goalscorer Senior.

Morecambe continued to press though and the U's defended for long periods.

Oliver's goalbound shot was blocked by his own team-mate Kevin Ellison as the clock ticked down but Colchester held out to claim an impressive away win.
