Braintree Town manager Brad Quinton says he has stepped down from his position as Iron boss.

Quinton said he had taken the decision to leave following his team's 2-1 defeat by Eastleigh on Saturday afternoon.

The result left Braintree bottom of the Vanarama National League with 15 games of the season played.

Quinton said he was proud of the achievements he had had since taking over as Iron boss in the summer of 2017, including leading them to Vanarama National League South play-off final success at the end of last season to earn them a place back in the top flight.

However, the start of this season has proved difficult, with Braintree having won just once and currently propping up the table.

Quinton, who joined as manager from Enfield Town and is still Braintree's record appearance holder in a glittering playing career with the Iron, said he had stepped down as he was unable to make the squad changes that he wanted as he looked to boost his team's league position.

He had brought in striker Jake Cass ahead of the game against Eastleigh but felt being unable to make further new additions that he was seeking to do had made his position untenable.

He said: "I'd like to thank everyone involved with the club because I've had a fantastic time in my short time as manager.

"What an achievement we've had, but I feel if I can't bring in any new players then I'm fighting a losing battle."
