Admit the trials of a tough week for Braintree Town, there has been one piece of good news for the Iron with the call-up of goalkeeper Ben Killip into the England C squad to face Estonia Under-23s next month.

The game will be played at Leyton Orient on Wednesday, October 10.

Despite the disappointment of conceding a late penalty against Maidstone on Saturday and seeing five goals go past him on Tuesday evening against Orient, Killip’s superb form in the early part of the season has earned him a call-up by England C manager Paul Fairclough.

The defeat by Orient was particularly tough for the Iron keeper, who got caught out by a long ball in behind the defence for the O’s third goal.

Braintree boss Brad Quinton said it was a case of a keeper getting caught in two minds, but he was quick to lavish praise on Killip for the form the 22-year-old former Grimsby Town stopper has had since joining Braintree at the start of the season.

“The third goal knocked the wind out of us (against Leyton Orient) if I’m honest,” said Quinton.

“They hooked it in behind and Ben got caught between staying at home and coming, but I’m not going to fault Ben Killip.

“He has been tremendous; he’s an England C goalkeeper who is going to go on to have an amazing career.

“What he’s done for us this season has been immaculate, but it’s tough when you are caught in two minds like that as a goalkeeper.”
