IN the wake of seeing his team slip back to the foot of the Vanarama National League table, Braintree Town manager Brad Quinton is plotting further changes to his Iron squad.

Quinton admitted that even before his team’s 5-1 defeat by leaders Leyton Orient that he had been discussing new players coming in and he was hopeful that he would have something sorted ahead of their trip to FC Fylde on Saturday.

He said: “We’ve been working hard with pro clubs this week to try to get some over the line for this Saturday and I’ve had some other loans being offered to us.

“We’ll talk to them ahead of the weekend but it has to be right for the club.

“We are what we are and we have to be realistic and honest with what we have got.

“But it’s looking positive and I’ve spoken with the chairman so we’ll look at what we can do.

“We’ll have to get some boys out on loan as well as there are boys here who need to be playing.”

Quinton agrees, though, that making further changes to his squad isn’t ideal and he wants to keep things settled rather than be tinkering.

In contrast, Leyton Orient's starting line-up against the Iron on Tuesday night was the same for a ninth game in a row, however, Quinton said he felt making changes was something he needed to do if his team were to get to where they wanted to be.

The Iron boss added: “Ideally you don’t want to keep changing but until goals come you have to be realistic.

“You need consistency in football and I get that.

“There comes a point when you have a squad of 15 or 16 and you stick with that, but if people keep making mistakes or not taking chances, how long do you give them?

“How long do you keep saying ‘unlucky’ or ‘another mistake, but you stay there’ when you have other people sitting on the bench or sitting in the stand who are not being paid but they’re travelling all this way to try to get into the squad?

“I have to look at people’s fitness, their stats and what they are covering in training to see who is peaking.

“We are looking to see if we can bring a striker in and maybe release two players.

“It has to be right, though, and we have to be honest.”
