SAM Owusu says Witham Town’s players must focus on their performance against Ware last weekend rather than the end result as they prepare to get back to winning ways at Cheshunt on Saturday.

Having dominated their Bostik League division north home game against Ware, Witham were hit by a sucker punch as they paid the price for not taking any of the numerous chances they created over the 90 minutes.

It left a late own goal as the difference between the two and Town going down to a 1-0 defeat, but Owusu, who played at full-back in that game, said they can’t think about the negative way the fixture ended.

Instead, they must focus on the positive way they played in creating the goal opportunities and just be sharper in front of goal as they look to bounce back at Cheshunt on Saturday and then Team Bury on Tuesday and return to the form that had brought them 16 points from their previous seven outings.

Owusu said: “We have to take the positives out of the game rather than dwelling on the negatives.

“We created a lot of chances and looked solid at the back until the goal.

“It has been a good run that we’ve been on and we just have to look at it as a one-off and make sure we get back to winning ways against Cheshunt on Saturday.

“It was a difficult result to take against Ware because I felt we dominated the game, but in this league, if you don’t take your chances, then it can come back to bite you as the game goes on.

“That’s what happened to us as we dominated but couldn’t take our chances.

“We went into the game with the same attitude as we’ve had in all other games so it was no different in the build-up.

“It doesn’t matter who you’re playing in this league, anyone can beat anyone so we have to take these games as seriously as we would if we were facing someone at the top of the league.

“It just wasn’t our day.

“Our front three have been fantastic in recent weeks, but we just caught Ware on the wrong day and they took their chance while we didn’t take ours.”
