BRAINTREE TOWN 3 WELLING UNITED 0
FA Trophy first round proper
Braintree Town eased into the second round of the FA Trophy with an important first round win against Welling United at the Amlin Stadium.
Having seen their Skrill Premier trip to Aldershot Town end disappointingly on Tuesday, the Iron responded with a good performance against a young Wings side.
The amount of possession they had over the 90 minutes may have awarded Braintree more goals, but a strike by Dan Holman before the break, added to second-half goals for substitutes Dan Sparkes and Jordan Cox were more than enough to secure a safe passage.
Iron boss Alan Devonshire said: “Welling rested a few because they have a big cup game coming up next week, but you still have to beat what is put in front of you.
“I don’t think (Braintree keeper) Nick (Hamann) had too much to do and we’re through to the next round so that’s what it’s all about.
“I’ve always done quite well in the FA Trophy, but we want to go as far as we can this year.
“A home draw in the next round would be nice and we’ll see how far we can go.”
