PEOPLE passionate about the planet swarmed Southend in an under-sea themed fancy dress procession on Wednesday.
The march was part of a country-wide event around coastal communities, named Make The Wave, aimed to “send a signal to Boris Johnson” during the days leading up of the G7 Summit in Cornwall.
The group’s point was about the climate crisis and rising sea levels.
Southend Extinction Rebellion led the walk which resulted in around 100 locals from tots to pensioners gather outside the Odeon at 3.45pm at the north end of High Street, and walk through town and along the seafront banging drums, handing out flyers and attracting onlookers’ attention in an array of costume.
A spokesman for Make The Wave said: “By coming together, we will send a clear signal to delegates at the G7 conference that people in communities vulnerable to sea level rise and flooding demand more action to tackle the climate emergency.”
The G7 Summit is made up of seven of the largest economies in the world who meet annually for closed-knit discussions.
It takes place in Carbis Bay in Cornwall, on June 11 -13.
A spokesman for G7 UK said: “The Prime Minister will use the first in-person G7 Summit in almost two years to ask leaders to seize the opportunity to fight and build back better from coronavirus, uniting to make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous”.
