A RAMPAGING driver was dragged from his car by a police dog after he drove at more than 100mph around Basildon.

Mustafah Adam sped off from police officers on the A13 in the middle of the night after they spotted him veering across four lanes.

He initially stopped, but as officers approached he drove off.

The eight minute chase ended in Wickford when a police dog grabbed his arm and pulled him out of the vehicle.

The 21-year-old was driving a BMW with passengers and claimed he was scared for what would happen to his mother’s care if he were caught by police.

Basildon Crown Court heard yesterday that Adam’s mother had been the victim of a shooting in 2016, and he is her sole carer as his siblings are helping other family members in Pakistan.

The chase began on December 21, 2019 at 1.30am where Adam left the A13 before travelling on Pound Lane, Nevendon Road, the A127, and Golden Jubilee Way before he was boxed in by two police cars in London Road, Wickford.

During the chase Adam drove the wrong way on multiple roads, went around roundabouts in the wrong direction and reached speeds of 110 miles an hour.

Geoffrey Porter, prosecuting, said: “He approached Wickford, and drove on the wrong carriage of the duel carriageway.

“He was stopped by police and his vehicle was boxed in.

“A police dog was with the officer, the dog took him by the arm and he was dragged from the car.”

William Glover, mitigating, said Adam disputes that he had tried to drive off after being boxed in said the police dog attacked him on the ground.

Mr Glover said Adam, of Barking Road, London, had also received injuries to his face by glass on the ground when he was restrained.

He said: “He accepts his driving on that night was horrendous. There were a number of other people in the car.

“When he decided to drive off initially, he did so because he panicked and the other people in the car encouraged him to drive off.

“He knows he was responsible for the driving, but it was completely out of character.

“He worried about what would happen to the care for his mother if he were caught by the police.”

Recorder William Clegg QC gave Adam an eight month suspended prison sentence and 200 hours of unpaid work.
