A CRIMINAL escaped the clutches of the police by dodging them and bolting through a closing gate.

Stefan Crompton appeared at Basildon Crown Court yesterday where he was charged with one count of escaping lawful custody.

The 28-year-old, had been arrested by police officers on October 31 last year for an unrelated matter and had been transported to Basildon police station, in Great Oaks following his arrest.

As he was inside the compound, he bolted and ran through the closing gate to the site, and managed to escape before the gate completely shut.

However, Crompton was later caught again by the police, and subsequently charged with escape.

Appearing via video link at court yesterday in a dark shirt, Crompton spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth and enter a single guilty plea for his crime.

His reasons for fleeing police custody, and the details of how he managed to escape, were not detailed during the hearing.

Judge Andrew Hurst chose to adjourn the Crompton’s sentencing until November 16 to allow for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

The hearing will take place in the afternoon to allow time for Crompton, of Fair Street, in Bolton, to come to the court from his home address.

Judge Hurst said there are “sensitivities” in relation to the circumstances of the case and wanted the court to have more information.

Addressing Crompton, he said: “I won’t reserve the case to myself and will order a pre-sentence report, probation will be in touch.

“You have pleaded guilty and you will appreciate that the matter is serious.

“I have read the explanation you gave to police at the time.

“But I would want the court to have more information about it so I will adjourn until November 16.

“You will need to attend in person.”
