MUSIC mogul Simon Cowell is vying to sign a band involving a talented Leigh singer to his SYCO recording label.

Just days after Eleanor Hudson and four other girls formed the band Girl Tonic, having been put together by manager Leighton Dewar, the country went into lockdown as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Major labels are desperate to sign the group being dubbed ‘the next Spice Girls’ and Mr Cowell, who has worked with bands including One Direction, is eager to add Girl Tonic to his list of successful musicians.

Eliot Kennedy - who produced number one hits for the likes of the Spice Girls, Take That, S Club 7 and Boyzone - is working closely with Girl Tonic but it has been reported Mr Cowell, the creator of hit ITV show The X Factor, is losing the battle to secure the up-and-coming band’s signature.

A music industry insider said: “Every major record label is desperate to sign Girl Tonic and Simon Cowell is no different.

“It is widely recognised that pop is about to make a comeback in the charts and, in the current climate, a fresh new girl band that sing and dance with a girl next door image and a relatable brand is just what pop fans need.

“With Eliot Kennedy producing Girl Tonic, they are assured number ones and all the major labels are bidding to be the one to land their signature and launch them.

“It will be very interesting to see who Girl Tonic sign with but one thing is certain - they are ready for huge chart success with a string of pop hits already in the bag.”

Girl Tonic are eagerly waiting to record their first album together and looking to burst onto the scene next month.

Ms Hudson, from Leigh, attended the audition in February and bagged a place in the five-piece band.

The 24-year-old, along with her band-mates, have been tipped for great success.

The music industry insider added: “Having had a preview listen to Girl Tonic’s first single Fairground, I can tell you it is a real summer radio-friendly pop hit.

“The girls all have individual, relatable personalities that will appeal to the market.

“It really is no surprise they have got so much interest in the music industry and that Simon Cowell is so keen to sign them to his label.

“Who wouldn’t want the next Spice Girls on their roster and the feeling is Girl Tonic will be just that.”
