EMERGENCY services rushed to a flat block in Southend after a window pane was dropped from the sixth floor.

Residents of Bewley Court, in Whittingham Avenue, were alerted to the commotion at around 9.30pm last night.

Police and ambulance crews were spotted at the scene.

One 18-year-old resident of Whittingham Avenue said: “Last night I was out on a walk and came across this, when the man pushed the window out it made a huge bang noise.

“This resulted in police, security and ambulance crews arriving shortly after, most of the block of flats was lit up with residents looking out.

“As time went on more police, ambulance and fire units were arriving, they were also joined by locksmiths company to unlock the man’s door.

“This went on for more than four hours.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service Trust said: “We were called to Whittingham Avenue at around 9.20pm on Tuesday night to reports of concerns for welfare.

“An ambulance, ambulance officer and three hazardous area response team (HART) vehicles attended but no one required transporting to hospital.”

A man in his 30s has been arrested.
