A HUGELY popular fundraiser who devoted his life to charitable causes has died.

Noel Kelleway, 68, died on Tuesday following a short illness.

From running 39 marathons to shaking Poppy collection tins, Mr Kelleway, was also instrumental in founding Havens Hospices and helping to launch the Southend Half Marathon, raising more than £1.1 million for hospice care.

Southend Mayor, John Lamb, who last year presented Mr Kelleway with the Citizen of Southend Sir Teddy Taylor Award for his 40 years serving the community, said: “It was a terrible shock to hear of the passing of Noel Kelleway.

“Noel worked tirelessly for the borough and its citizens. Noel, or the “Rhino of Nelson Street” as he was affectionately known, will be sorely missed by so many people. His passing is a great loss to the town.”

Ian Gilbert, leader of the council, added: “The council is saddened to hear of the passing of Noel Kelleway. Noel was an inspirational member of the community, spending years of his time volunteering for various charities and community projects.

“His selfless attitude to life and his infectious commitment to helping those in need will be sorely missed.”

A keen rugby fan, Mr Kelleway, from Leigh, was associated with Westcliff Rugby Club for more than 50 years

A tribute on the club’s website, said: “Noel was heavily involved for many years with the Old Westcliffian Association, and was well-known figure around the borough, raising large amounts for good causes by dint of his marathon running, which he still undertook until recently. The club owes a huge debt to Noel, and we will miss him greatly.”

Louise Gloyne, head of philanthropy at Havens Hospices, said: “Noel was a true ‘Havens Hero’ and the perfect example of someone dedicated to our cause.

“Noel’s contribution to Havens Hospices has been invaluable. We are incredibly sad that he has died, but we will ensure that his legacy lives on within this charity.”

Mr Kelleway was an honorary auditor for the Leigh Operatic and Dramatic Society, and a governor at Westcliff High School for Boys.

Headteacher Mike Skelly said: “Noel never forgot that Westcliff High School for Boys, its teachers and friends he made during his time here played a significant part in shaping him. He believed that the purpose of life was to help others and that translated into his support for his School and its pupils. We will miss him greatly.”

Mr Kelleway also raised funds for St Lukes Hospice, in Basildon.

Stella Kerins, from St Luke’s, said: It’s thanks to generous people like Noel that we’re able to continue. We will be forever grateful for his support and the kindness he showed for so many others.”

Mr Kelleway leaves behind his wife, Sheila, daughters Rachel and Sarah and son James along with five grandchildren.
