DIY SOS has come to the aid of a football fan left with horrific injuries after a brutal attack post-match attack in Southend.

Simon Dobbin was attacked in East Street, Southend, at 7.15pm on March 21, 2015.

He had been supporting his team, Cambridge United, against the Blues and was enjoying a drink with friends in the Blue Boar pub following the 0-0 draw.

the injuries he sustained in the attack has left him unable to walk or talk and his wife, Nicole, is now his full-time carer.

In total, 13 Southend United fans were eventually convicted of their part in the attack.

The DIY SOS team was tasked with building a downstairs extension, a bedroom, physio space, wet room and social space for Simon, from Mildenhall, in Suffolk.

Speaking after the changes were unveiled on the BBC One last night, wife Nicole said: “The changes that DIY SOS made to the house have made life so much easier for all of us.

“Simon was originally living in the dining room and he didn’t have his own space or his own privacy and we would have to bring a bowl of water to him in bed to wash him.

“Now he has his own bedroom where the living room was. He’s also got his own wet room which is more private so he can keep his dignity.

“They’ve installed CCTV and a monitor in Simon’s room so I can check on him.

"The changes that DIY SOS made to the house have made life so much easier for all of us.

“The monitor means I can hear him breathing and it’s like he’s next to me. It means that I don’t have to constantly be by his side to know he’s okay.

“The doorways and the front door have been widened so it’s easier to get Simon from one room to the other in his wheelchair.

“Before we had a manual hoist but now we have a ceiling hoist that he can use to get from his bedroom to his en-suite."

"You've really changed our lives... there are no words, what you've done is amazing."

After the attack, Simon spent a year in hospital and defied experts' views he would not survive.
