This week we visit Stanford-Le-Hope, that has long being recognized meaning “the stone ford” in Saxon.

In the first photo we see children in front of St Margaret’s Church viewed from Church Hill in 1923. The church dates from about 1180 although we know that St Cedd was present at Mucking and East Tilbury in 653 and strongly suggests the possibility of Stanford having a Saxon church, sadly there is no evidence to support this.

Next we see a view from the church of a village blacksmith and ironmongers shop, formerlly the Cock and Magpie Inn, which was next to what is now the Inn On The Green. Then we have a view of the road from Stanford to Corringham as it was at the time of the 1914-1918 war.
