HOUSING association staff and tenants have raised over £6,000 for a cancer charity.

Greenfields Community Housing - which looks after former council housing stock in the Braintree district - has handed £6,335.71 to its charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over the last 12 months they have held fundraising events including a cakeathon, golf day, casino night and bric-a-brac sales.

Bricklayers Mark Bailey and Dave Heather were the first to raise some serious cash after being sponsored £700 for taking part in the Maldon Mud Race last year.

Mr Bailey, who came fourth in the race overall, said: “I thought it was a great cause and a very good excuse to roll around in the mud.

"Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, so I was more than happy to help.”
