HARWICH residents are being encouraged to support this year's poppy appeal.

Harwich Town Council, Royal British Legion and various military and local organisations will be remembering those who have fallen on Sunday, November 8 at war memorials in the area.

Dale Cheesman, the poppy appeal organiser for Harwich, said due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year's appeal is very different.

She has had to cut down on boxes, and there will be no street collecting - and only solo collectors at Morrisons, in Dovercourt.

Ms Cheesman said: "Please try and support this year’s appeal there are more ex-servicemen living on the streets, mental illness from past conflicts, poverty within their families, help costs money.

"We need your help to help them."

She added: "But this year could we please ask you to remember on your own doorstep and stay silence for two minutes to remember those who have fallen instead of attending the memorials, we value your support and care for your wellbeing, so please stay at home."
