THIS month Burnham should have been gearing itself up for the biggest event of its calendar - the spectacular summer carnival.

The carnival traditionally takes place on the last Saturday of September.

But as with so many cherished events, this year's spectacle has fallen victim to the coronavirus, with organisers announcing in June that they had been forced to call off the extravaganza.

Speaking at the time, carnival chairman Terry Martin said: “It has been really hard to make this decision as we all look forward to this every year."

Revellers will now have to wait until 2021 for the hotly-anticipated event, which is one of the region's biggest carnivals.

But there are hopes that people will hold celebrations in their gardens so there will still be a party atmosphere.

We've delved into our archives to dig out photos of past carnivals including the 100th anniversary in 2008.

Meanwhile the carnival committee has set up a Just Giving page to try to raise £1,000 so the carnival can return even bigger and better.
