Out of interest, does anyone else still have in their possession a map of Essex prepared by Barclays Bank back in the late 1960s?
The map (pictured) is a fold-up leaflet with a characterised map of Essex on one side and information on people and places printed on the other including entry fees to stately homes and museums. Audley End charged 2/6 for adults 1/3 for children while Colchester Castle and Ingatestone Hall were free!
On the map, Bradwell Power station is named as an Atomic Power Station, Basildon and Harlow are “new towns” and the Bartlow Hills, Roman burial mounds, in North West Essex are now in Cambridge.
It’s a fascinating insight into the past.
I’m not sure why Barclays produced it but glad that even at a young age I had an interest in maps and have kept it all these years.
