COUNCIL bosses say they will do “everything they can” to prevent any further tragedies at a bridge close to where a tragic teenager took his own life.

Kayden Cantlow, 14, was hit by a train last week after getting onto the railway line close to the Blue Bridge in Colchester.

His death come close to the year anniversary of the death of his mum Michelle.

Kayden’s brother Francis, 17, is now spearheading a campaign for safety improvements - and also to get people talking about mental health.

The family met Colchester MP Will Quince, who is urging Network Rail, Greater Anglia and Colchester Council to come together to understand their concerns.

Highways engineers visited the site on Wednesday and did not find any major safety issues, but Essex County Council infrastructure boss Kevin Bentley has commissioned further checks for later this year and said his team would work with Network Rail.

Braintree and Witham Times:

Mr Bentley said: “This is a terrible tragedy and all my thoughts are with this young man and his family and friends, many of whom have shown their love for and appreciation of him in memorials at the site.

“Following this tragic news our senior structures manager and a colleague visited the site on Wednesday and following an initial check they report no obvious problems with any defects in the structure.

“Despite this a further in-depth inspection will be carried out, as I want to make sure Essex Highways has done everything it can to stop a similar incident to this taking place again. I have commissioned a full engineering inspection of the bridge, which is due to take place later this year.

“That inspection will look at the entire condition of the structure and will establish whether further barriers can be installed to the bridge or whether other preventative measures can be implemented to help more effectively prevent members of the public from accessing the railway lines.”

“Network Rail are following their procedures to urgently review safety measures on site. including inspecting their solid, sharp-pointed aluminium fencing all around the track and the bridge.

“My officers are due to meet with them onsite next week and I have instructed them to work in partnership with Network Rail to the fullest extent.”
