RESIDENTS have been having their say on plans to make face coverings compulsory in all shops from the end of next week.

The Government has announced wearing a face covering in shops and supermarkets will be compulsory from next Friday in a move to try to limit the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement yesterday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said anyone failing to comply with the order could face a fine of up to £100.

The move, which brings England in line with Scotland and many other European nations, follows World Health Organisation advice to help guard against new outbreaks of the virus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Government have faced criticism from some for the delayed introduction of the rules in England.

Residents have been having their say on the plan on the Gazette Facebook page about the plan, which follows face coverings being compulsory on public transport.

Karen Bills said: “I understand the reason and I will, of course, wear one (even though they make me feel a bit sick when wearing them), but I have to say this does put me off shopping in store and push me towards the online option even more.

“I worry this may kill off more shops if others feel the same way.”

Anne Hennessy said: “I have worn a face masks since before lockdown and will continue to do so.

“I think everyone should wear one when out and about to protect each other from this awful killer virus.”

Tracey Ingram said: “Why now, three months gone? So what will make the difference?

“Also see all the prices triple like hand sanitiser did then you have those with disabilities or breathing difficulties will they be exempt or stopped again from having a life.”

Vanda Lawrence added: “Should have been mandatory from the outset in shops and other public places.

“Not only are you protecting others in case you are carrying the virus, but you are protecting yourself from catching the virus.”
