A pub landlord’s cover version of an 80’s pop song has been released as a charity single following his tragic death.

Scott Gilhooly’s remake of Only You by Yazoo is now available to download on all music platforms, with proceeds going to homeless charity, Hope House, in Braintree.

Mr Gilhooly died from stab wounds to his neck and chest following an incident at his pub, the Swiss Bell, back on Sunday, May 17.

The landlord had recorded his cover version of Only You during an open mic night at his pub several years ago.

It was played on BBC radio a week after his death and has now been officially released as a single.

The idea was put together by David Elliott, Sarah Patterson, Vikki McCord, Charlie Thrower and Terry Crouch who were all friends or regulars at the Swiss Bell.

David said: “We approached Scott’s family to see if they were ok with it and they asked any money raised go to Hope House.

“It’s quite fitting because Scott was always doing things to the homeless. He was a hugely popular guy in Braintree and even now is going to keep on making a difference.

“There’s been quite a bit of backwards and forwards with it but it’s all been set up with the music distributors.

“We should get an idea of how popular it’s been at the weekend.”

Police are continuing to investigate Mr Gilhooly’s death and have since charged Lawrence Bourke, 23, with murder following the incident.

Bourke, of Lister Road, Braintree, is due to answer the charge during a trial and preparation hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on July 15.

Friends organising Mr Gilhooly’s charity single say they are determined to ensure the landlord’s legacy lives on.

David added: “I think we wanted to arrange this because we didn’t want our friend to be remembered for his tragic death.

“We wanted to help with his legacy and make sure he is remembered for all the good things he did.

“The response from Braintree as a whole since Scott’s death has been fantastic and it just shows you what he meant to the town.”
