ANOTHER £1.7 million in grant funding has been made available to businesses who have fallen through the cracks and missed out on other coronavirus support schemes.

Colchester Council has set up a Discretionary Business Grants scheme to help firms which are unable to access the Small Business or the Retail Hospitality and Leisure grants, which were announced in March.

The new scheme will distribute grants of up to £10,000 to eligible small businesses such as market traders, physiotherapists and nurseries.

The funding is part of a £42 million rescue package from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government for the town’s economy.

The council has admitted it is unlikely the £1.7 million will be able to help all firms which need support, but it would do its best to distribute the cash as widely as possible.

David King, councillor responsible for business and resources, said the new grant scheme was welcome news for the town.

He said: “Covid-19 business grants announced in March have been a welcome relief for more than 2,500 local businesses.

“We have swiftly distributed almost £30 million but the eligibility criteria meant many businesses could not access any support.

“I know many good businesses have struggled through no fault of their own.

“Our funds are limited. We cannot help all. But we will spread the £1.7 million we have as widely as we can.

“This funding will be vital help for hundreds of businesses, and we encourage applications.

“If an application is unsuccessful, there are Bounce Back loans and other areas of support and advice.”

Applications for Discretionary Business Grants need to be made before June 10.
