A SINGER serenaded her street alongside her guitar-playing neighbour as a tribute to tireless NHS workers.

Yazmin Wood, 22, decided to take an extra step to thank medical staff and care workers following recent rounds of applause.

The Clap for Our Carers campaign has seen people emerge from their homes at 8pm every Thursday to show their appreciation.

Yazmin, a professional singer who is currently isolating at home with her parents, treated her road in West Bergholt, to their very own mini-concert.

The singer hoped to unite her neighbours while showing her gratitude to key workers.

She said: “We did a clap for carers the first week and then I decided instead of just clapping and going back inside, perhaps we can put a smile on people’s faces by performing a song together.

“My neighbour plays guitar and we have played together before, so we decided to sing after each Clap for Carers.”

The touching tribute could be heard for miles around.

“There is a Facebook page. When I finished, a post was put on saying what lucky road is being treated to a song. Where I live was quite far so clearly with the speakers it travelled,” said Yazmin.

“I was worried if it was shared on social media we’d get a lot of people coming to have a look, what with social distancing, but everyone was respectful and keeping their distance from each other.”

As the country continues to follow strict lockdown measures, the Clap for Our Carers campaign is a means of saying a heartfelt thank you.

But the applause is not just for healthcare workers, it is also for people in other walks of life who are helping to deliver key services in unprecedented times.

Yazmin said: “There is a girl in our street who works as a mental health nurse and someone who works in the Co-op in West Bergholt, it was for them too.

“I make sure at the start of each performance, and at the end, I mention the NHS workers and carers, to remind people what this is all for.

“It is nice people everywhere are taking their time to thank them, showing appreciation.

“It is also a good way of getting people outdoors for a while.

“I saw one a few nights ago where they were playing S Club 7, Reach, people were dancing to that in the street.

“We have to be careful with social distancing, but it is nice to see.”
