IN last week’s Letters, Mary Ann Mumford stated that Bradwell B offers us huge opportunities.
Yes – huge opportunities to leave enormous problems for future generations.
She says that we are better at handling waste now.
That is rubbish. Spent fuel from new reactors will be much more radioactive than existing waste.
It will require a much longer cooling period, between 60 and 140 years, before it can start to be stored if the huge space can be found.
Experts say that we have no idea how to estimate, let alone manage, the spent fuel and other dangerous wastes that will arise from Bradwell B.
We do know that the site is liable to flood and will be exposed to sea level rise, coastal erosion and storm surges due to climate change.
Nuclear power is ludicrously expensive and we are now relying on foreign governments, namely the Chinese with all the security risks that brings.
The danger of accidents and terrorist incidents is high.
If we put more money into renewables, we don’t need this outdated and dangerous source of energy.
