AN ambulance driver will be taking on a trek to thank a charity which grants wishes to poorly children.

Carly Brinkley is a patient transport service driver for the East of England Ambulance Service.

She takes sick children from Colchester Hospital to specialist hospitals in London including St Thomas’.

Carly, 24, has been with the ambulance service for four years and wanted to give something back to charities like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children with serious illnesses.

She said: “You get to see first hand what these charities do for these kids.

“I have picked up children who have gone in into hospital in the worst possible way and then some children who have come out so much better.

“I just wanted to give something back to them.”

Carly will be walking 28km around the Lake District to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

She said: “I have never done anything like this before.

“It’s going to be a challenge as I broke my leg two years ago and it was quite extensive.

“When it comes to physical activity it can be quite strenuous for me.”

Despite the personal challenge and the predicted pain caused by her endeavour, Carly believes the trek will be worth it in the end.

She said: “I have transported children with leukaemia, the treatment is really tiring for them and it’s very extensive.

“I was speaking to a family who had Make-A-Wish come out and throw their little girl a birthday party with a huge bouncy castle and balloons.

“It was the happiest day of her life.”

In preparation for her challenge, on June 13, Carly has joined the gym and will be taking part in a lot of outside trekking.
