The Lakeside Theatre at Essex University is a great space, and has become a major venue not just for student work, but for touring companies and NT Live screenings.

This autumn is a particularly rich line up of productions, and here are just a few that have caught my eye.

One that I would highly flag up is the intriguing Everything I See I Swallow on November 7, which was a major hit and prize winner at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year.

Exploring the nature of self-expression, an art curator discovers her daughter has amassed more than 50,000 followers on Instagram by posting semi naked pictures of herself.

How does she protect her daughter and when does protection become control?

What sets this production apart is the aerial work with the erotic art of Japanese rope bondage - Shibari.

The following Thursday, November 14, there's an interactive performance game exploring the legendary tale, Beowulf.

Then the week after Family Minded by Bekka Hudson features anecdotes and experiences of her and her father, and their lives touched by the black dog of depression. That's November 21 and 22 in the Studio.

Marlon Solomon’s Conspiracy: A Lizards Tale, is also on November 21, in the Main Theatre, and starts with him, as a Jew, discovering that some Jews believe the Holocaust was a conspiracy theory and didn’t occur. In our era of fake news, this sounds like a fascinating piece.

Leah Cousins, which runs from November 25 to 27, is set in the 1780s, where the local midwife finds herself falling out of favour when smooth talking Dr Gibb arrives in the village,

Arriving at the Lakeside on November 29 is the acclaimed and multi award winning Queens of Sheba. Turned away from a nightclub for being “too black”, four women take to the stage to tell us their stories, misogyny and dancing, music and drinking.

Student productions include a double bill of new writing on October 29 and 30, Pinter’s The Homecoming on December 3 to 4, and don't forget the Theatre Arts Society annual Panto with adult themes, Little Red Riding Hood, which runs from December 11 to 13.
