NEWLYWEDS who had planned to watch a rugby match in Japan for their honeymoon had to change plans after a typhoon hit.

Thousands of England fans were left disappointed after England’s final Rugby World Cup pool match was cancelled because of Typhoon Hagibis.

Close to 70,000 spectators were expected at Saturday’s game against France, which was due to be played in Yokohama, about 20 miles south of Tokyo.

Karl Green and his wife Shannan, from Colchester, had hoped to begin their honeymoon at the fixture.

The couple were in Heathrow waiting for their flight to Tokyo when they got the news.

They got married in May and planned their delayed honeymoon over a year ago so they could watch the World Cup.

They spent £2,000 for four days in Japan.

Despite being devastated at the time Karl, 27, said they were now in Japan and were looking forward to the rest of the trip.

He said: “We landed in Tokyo at around 10am on Friday and made our way to Yokohama which is where the game was meant to have taken place.

“We literally found out it had been cancelled as we were about to check in at Heathrow, we were both devastated to be honest.

“We couldn’t believe it as we’d spent nearly £2,500 on the four days in Japan, tickets and flights and accommodation at the start of our honeymoon before flying over to New Zealand.”

The couple had been told not to leave their hotel on Saturday as all flights and local transport had been cancelled.

Karl said: “To be honest we feel a lot better about the situation now and are just going to try enjoy what time we have here as we’re not due to fly to New Zealand until Tuesday.

“We went to a bar called Laval to get the honeymoon back on track.”

The typhoon threatened to batter the capital with the heaviest rain and winds in 60 years, shutting down stores, factories and subway systems.

The storm could be the strongest to hit Tokyo since 1958.

People were warned to prepare for high waves and storm surges, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
