COLCHESTER Castle saw record numbers of visitors through its doors when it opened for free.

The castle featured as part of Heritage Open Days, England’s largest free festival of history and culture.

It welcomed a record 3,861 visitors who were entertained by the venue’s very own jester.

The visitors were able to enjoy the museum’s collections, including its new exhibition Adorn: Jewellery, The Human Story.

Julie Young, councillor responsible for culture, said: “I am overwhelmed at how many people ventured out and celebrated Heritage Open Days at the castle.”

Heritage Open Days in Colchester is coordinated by Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service. It is part of the national event coordinated by the National Trust.
