A COUNCILLOR is calling for all future playgrounds to have disabled-friendly equipment.

Lexden councillor Lewis Barber (Con) is trying to raise funds to build a new playground in his ward and replace worn-out equipment elsewhere.

He is also looking into whether there is a policy to ensure all future play areas are accessible to all children.

He said: “We are looking at community opinion, potential sites and funding for a new playground in Lexden.

“We have received requests to investigate this issue because of the distance many families have to travel to reach their nearest playground.

“In West Bergholt, we are also working with Colchester Borough Homes to deliver upgrades to the existing playground in Erle Harvard Road, which is now quite old.”

Mr Barber says there is unallocated cash in the council’s budget and he is hoping some of this cash can be allocated to parks and recreation.

He has also been contacted by parents asking for disabled-friendly play equipment.

He said: “It is also my passion to ensure all playgrounds in the borough are fully accessible for children, regardless of whether they have a disability or not. It is important there are no barriers for children to enjoy our community facilities and children of all backgrounds can share such spaces.

“I aim to work with the relevant cabinet members to make this happen.”

Martin Goss (Lib Dem), Colchester councillor responsible for environment, said Mr Barber’s suggestions would be welcome. He said: “We pride ourselves on our play areas which are Disability Discrimination Act compliant.

“We are always looking at ways we can continue to create a Better Colchester by enhancing the offer to ensure everyone can really benefit from the fantastic open spaces we have across the borough.

“We need to do this alongside the other pressures on our budgets and we are always open to suggestions. Mr Barber is well aware of the council processes and channels he can raise his suggestions through and I look forward to hearing them.”
