A NUMBER of events are being held across Colchester to kickstart summer.

The first event is the free Salary Brook Wildlife Walk taking place on Saturday, starting at 10.30am.

Walkers will join the Colchester Natural History Society to look at plants, birds, insects and other wildlife on a pleasant walk through the site.

Anyone wishing to take part is asked to meet at Salary Brook near the Scarfe Way parking area, off Avon Way in Colchester.

This event will run until about 3.30pm, although walkers are free to leave at any time.

The second free event is the Summer Wildlife Trail app launch at High Woods Country Park on June 8.

Visitors who download the new app onto their phone will be able to enjoy an interactive one-mile wildlife trail and discover facts about the inhabitants of the park.

The app is suitable for all age groups but for those under five-years-old a simplified paper version costing £1 will be available from the Visitor Centre. This drop-in event will be taking place between 11am and 3pm and staff at the Visitor Centre will be on hand.

The third event, Fishing for Beginners at High Woods Country Park on June 9, is now fully booked.

Martin Goss (Lib Dem), councillor responsible for environment, said: “There are more than 300 open spaces and 16 countryside sites across the borough and events such as these enable us to share, appreciate and learn about the local wildlife we have on our doorstep and the important role it plays in our environment.”
