A BOARD game café is rolling in success as it celebrates its first year in business.

The Dice and a Slice café which opened in Queen Street, Colchester, boasts a collection of 450 games.

The venue runs as a normal café but people can pay £2 for an hour or £5 a day and can play as many games as they want.

The unique venture was set up by Jessica Caws and her family, with daughter Annabel Hutton managing the cafe.

Jessica says the past year has been very successful.

She said: “It has gone brilliantly, when we first started we didn’t know much about the gaming community here so it was a punt in the dark but it has got busier and busier each week.

“I love the fact we get different kinds of people.

“We get students, families and older people who just want to come in for a chat.

“We have regulars from Bury St Edmunds and Norwich as they don’t have anything like this in their areas.”

The family has also been experimenting with comedy nights and have planned quiz nights and an end-of-exam blow out for students.

The café, which now has up to 14 staff, will soon offer an afternoon tea with a difference.

Jessica said: “Usually there is always something you don’t like in an afternoon tea so we will let people choose a drink, sandwich and cake to go with their scones and jam.”

The café is a stone’s throw away from the St Botolph’s Quarter, an area Jessica feels needs brightening up.

She said: “It would be interesting to know what is happening there.

“Anything would be better than what is there, someone suggested a splash park which I thought was a great idea.”

To celebrate the year anniversary the café is offering free board game play with any purchase on June 7.
