A TEAM of neighbours are set to use pedal power as they take on a 105km race in the battle against cancer.

The women from Stanway will be taking on the Women V Cancer Ride the Night Challenge from Windsor to central London and back again.

Claire Partner, 51, will be joined by Sandra Crosby, Steph Seaward, Cathy Hudson-Bett, Sue Cross and Karen Lawson for the night time ride.

The event is being held to raise money for Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.

Claire, Cathy and Sue previously took on the race in 2017 raising £1,000 and have now joined forces to form the Stanway Spinners.

Claire, who is a tour guide, said: “We came home feeling exhausted but we had caught the cycling bug. We didn’t do too much cycling after that but decided we should do it again and have got three other friends to join us.”

The team have been out and about on their bikes across north Essex getting ready for the challenge – with a little help of a cake stop incentive.

Claire said: “It is whatever gets us round. We are not the fittest cyclists but we are enjoying looking at the scenery and taking in the beautiful area we live in.

“We see so many people out on their bikes it now seems to be a more popular sport though we are overtaken by everybody else when we go out cycling on a Sunday morning.

“We want to raise awareness for the charities. So many people know someone close to them who has been affected by cancer.”

So far the Stanway Spinners have raised £2,300.
