A LIBERAL Democrat candidate in Colchester revealed she and her councillor husband were also verbally abused while out campaigning last week.

Helen Chuah, standing in St Anne’s and John’s ward, said she and husband Mike Hogg were invited into a resident’s home in Parsons Heath where a man launched a foul-mouthed tirade.

She said: “The woman invited us in. This huge bloke was sitting on the settee with the TV blaring out. He asked if we lived in a democracy and before we could say anything else he came out with all sorts of abuse, he called us all sorts of names.

“We realised the woman was his mum, she was smiling and laughing away and left straight away.

“It wasn’t nice, I was so shaken. We thought we were invited in because they had a problem and wanted to discuss it with us.”

Ms Chuah was previously a Colchester councillor and said people had seemed “less receptive” at their doors compared to previously.

Ms Chuah spoke out after Conservative candidate Carla Hales was violently assauled while campaigning for the elections on Wednesday.

  • The other candidates standing for St Anne's and St John's are Megan Maltby - Green, HK Norman - Lab and Thomas Rowe - Cons.
