They’re the new big thing on the local music scene - and they’ve only been going a matter of months.

Harwich’s Swimsuit Competition look set for a big 2019 with a buzz about them usually reserved for groups that have been touring the gig circuit for years.

Not that the various members of the band haven’t done their time, musically speaking that is. Made-up of Amber Scott on guitar and lead vocals; bass player brother Toby; lead guitarist Michael Illingworth and drummer Gaz Burney, all of them have been performing for many years.

While Amber and Toby have been a key part of their father’s We Are Music project in Harwich, Michael has been in several local bands as has Gaz Burney, most notably Dingus Khan.

Amber says: “We only really got together as a band last August/September time. Before that I was doing a lot of acoustic stuff on my own. I used to be in a band a while back and I kind of missed having people around me, which is how the band got together.”

After writing and releasing debut single, Honey, the band have picked up interest from BBC Introducing, and a whole raft of live slots, including the Colchester Arts Centre’s On showcase gig last month.

They’re back at the Church Street venue supporting London-based three piece Snack Family, on Tuesday, February 19.

With more support from interestingly titled The EU Common Agricultural Policy, doors open at 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced £7 and £6, available from 01206 500900 or at colchesterartscentre.com
