BOMB squad experts descended after a Second World War device was discovered in a garage.

Police and a bomb disposal team from Colchester Troop, 621 Squadron, 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps were called to Samson's Road, Brightlingsea, shortly after 1.30pm on Friday.

A member of the public had found what they believed was a suspected item of munition while clearing out a house.

The bomb squad were able to identify it as an inert Second World War-vintage two inch mortar bomb.

It contained no explosives and was recovered for safe disposal. An Army spokesman said: "We would encourage the public to raise the alarm if they do have concerns about any suspect items they find and not to touch them. It is better to be safe than sorry."

A spokesman for Essex Police added: "We attended a property following reports that what was believed to be an unexploded bomb had been discovered inside the garage.

"A cordon was put in place and several houses were evacuated as a precaution.

"A bomb disposal team attended at around 2.20pm today and declared it to be an inactive device.

"It has since been removed from the property."

The two-inch mortar was issued to the British Army and the Commonwealth armies and was used in the Second World War and later conflicts.

It was thought to be more portable than large mortars and had greater range and firepower than rifle grenades.
