A FITNESS fanatic pushed himself to the absolute limit by attempting one and a half miles of gruelling burpees for charity.

Gabriel Beckett carried out the challenge to raise money for the Samaritans charity and also raise awareness of mental health.

He gave himself just eight weeks to train for the challenge which saw him perform burpees around Abbey Fields in Colchester.

A burpee, or squat thrust, is a full body exercise used in strength training and as an aerobic exercise in which you go from a standing position, into a squat position and then perform a press up.

Gabriel, who lives in Colchester, said the challenge meant a lot to him on a personal level.

He said: “I’ve battled mentally for a long time in silence with my depression and suicidal thoughts.

“To share before I felt was a sign of weakness and would ruin my personal and professional life.

“But I no longer have anything left to lose.

“It’s so easy to fake your happiness over social media without realising the ones closest to you are fighting the hardest battles.

“Exercise has always been my therapy and keeps my demons at bay and if I can help inspire others to reach out in times of need like others have done with me, then this physical challenge and pain will be worth every step.”

He added: “Samaritans do an amazing job at supporting those when they need it most, or when you feel you can’t turn to anyone for help or support.”

The Samaritans said they were amazed at how well he did, having managed to do 1,170 burpees during the one and a half mile challenge.

Gabriel runs boot camp sessions himself but the challenge was still a tough one.

It took him four hours to complete.

Despite the challenge being so tough, he has still managed to raise more than £1,500 for Samaritans.
