THE FA has recognised a man who has dedicated his life to football for 50 years.

Justin Kilby, 85, of Maldon, received the Long Service to Football Award from the FA in recognition of his work to build youth football in the town.

Mr Kilby – known as Albert – was being treated for a serious heart problem at Broomfield Hospital when he and his wife Margaret, 81, received the news.

Margaret said: “He was in hospital at the time. They got in touch with our son who said he was going to have an award.

“We thought it was just going to be a certificate. Then when they got here, they came with a medal, cupcakes, the certificate and letters - it was quite overwhelming.”

Albert founded Maldon Saints YFC in 1970 because a group of boys in his road, including his son, were looking for a place to play football.

The club started as a single team in Promenade Park, but has since grown to have more than 250 players.

Albert remains club president, as well as president of Maldon, Heybridge and District Royal British Legion.

Albert said: “When the Blackwater and Dengie League started we began being able to play with teams in the area.

“When the club started, we used to do anything we could to raise money and promote the club. We held stalls in the high street to try and raise awareness.

“The club was a part of the beginning of the league in a big way.”

As the club continued to grow, Albert has continued to encourage people of all ages and abilities to play.

In the past 20 years his most important project has been the ‘soccer-bility’ team for disabled children.

Albert added: “It is great this community has been created through the club.

“We have children from four-years-old to men playing for us on a Sunday.

“It’s great to see all of them play and to have everything we have at the club now.”

Before Maldon Saints, Albert served in the armed forces, where he also played football. He continued to play after his service, and set up an army cadets football team in Maldon while still playing for Elgin City FC.

FA chairman Greg Clarke recognised the huge contribution Albert has made to football in the Maldon community. He said: “You have dedicated countless hours to the Essex Football Association through your hard work and dedication.

“Maldon Saints YFC has grown from the once single team to now serving the community of Maldon with membership in excess of 250.

“Your work has been outstanding. You are valued more than you know.”
