PROPOSALS to install a zip-line in a country park in a bid to attract thousands more visitors are set to be refused.

Essex County Council applied for permission to construct the 500m long zip-line and create new pathways at Great Notley Country Park's Discovery Centre earlier this year.

It was hoped the plans would bring an extra 13,000 visitors to the park each year and create an extra two jobs.

However, an agenda for a Braintree council planning committee taking place on Tuesday, October 9, shows the plans have been recommended for refusal.

The refusal reasoning states: "The proposed development by reason of its size, scale and siting would appear unduly prominent within the site and result in harm to the character and amenity of the country park."

Great Notley Parish Council objected to the plans fearing they would change the character of the park and the plans wouldn't fit with its use as place mainly for other fun.

It was also concerned there would be an impact on the landscape and the bird sculpture and its mound as well, as worries that more visitors to the park at weekends and during school holidays would lead to parking and traffic problems.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said it would not be commenting until the planning committee has made a decision.

A planning report submitted by the council in January read: "The installation of the zip-line will have benefits across the district.

"The nature of the development will increase the visitor numbers to the Country Park and contribute to the Park’s future viability both functionally and financially.

"Additionally, the proposal will improve inclusive accessibility within the park through the introduction of additional footpaths to serve the proposal and wider area."
