Entrepreneurs and businesses from around the district were recognised at a council’s business awards.

The second annual Chairman’s Business Awards took place last Friday at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome.

Maldon District Council chairman Henry Bass hosted the awards, which saw 30 of the district’s businesses nominated.

Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award was awarded to smokehouse Lambton & Jackson.

The business started in early 2014, focused on the creation of artisan smoked salmon.

Best Established Business went to Gibbons Engineering Group, established for 48 years and now in its third generation. The Fast Track Business of the Year went to Secret Hamper which launched in June 2016.

New Business of the Year Award was awarded to Skeggs Beef Ltd which was set up in May 2016 and supplies beef to restaurants and supermarkets.

The overall Business of the Year Award went to Gibbons Engineering Group.

The firm was perceived as being the most able to contribute to the future economic growth of the district.

David Burrows, the council’s Economic Development and Partnerships Manager, said: “This year there were 30 entrants across the 4 categories highlighting the diversity of entrepreneurial talent in the Maldon District.

“Entrants represent many of our high growth sectors such as advanced manufacturing and engineering, construction, professional business services, agriculture including food and drink, and tourism.

“There were some extremely impressive businesses and entrepreneurs, so it was tough for the judges to make their decision.”
