A children's author returned to his former primary school ahead of the launch of his poetry book.

Andy Johnson, pen name Jonkers, popped in to lead an assembly at Bocking Primary School on Thursday, where he got the whole school up and running.

Mr Johnson, 51, is the author of Jimpy, Jimpy 2 (Chaos and Cat-Astrophe), and Terry Scope's Telescope.

He is soon to be releasing his first poetry collection, I'm So Ugly and Other Poems.

Mr Johnson, a primary school supply teacher, said: "I spent time talking about the two Jonkers books and how they are put together and about working with the author.

"I read an extract and also a couple of poems - I'm So Ugly and Going For a Run, which got them all on their feet.

"Bocking School is special to me as it was the school that I attended, as well as my mum, my granddad, my two brothers, one niece and two nephews.

"It is also one of the schools where I began my teacher training as well, it was interesting being back, it hasn't changed much."

Mr Johnson, of Maltings View, Braintree, also signed copies of his books for key stage two pupils after the assembly.
