A running events company is to stage a series of one mile time trials in honour of the late Sir Roger Bannister.

Braintree Sport and Health Club, in Panfield Lane, will host the event, organised by the Company of Runners, for all abilities.

In honour of Sir Roger, the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes, money raised from the event will go to the Braintree area Foodbank charity.

Company director John Stoneman said: "Sir Roger Bannister's achievement in running the first sub four-minute mile was the stuff of legends and we wanted to celebrate his passing.

"So we decided to arrange an afternoon of timed miles for anyone who wants to measure themselves against that great achievement."

"There will be up to eight people on the track in each heat, but really you will be running against Sir Roger and the clock.

"We'd like to thank our friends at Fusion who have donated the track time at no cost - which will really help us raise money."

The event will take place from 2pm on March 17.

The races will be open to runners of all ages and abilities as long as they can complete four running laps of the track.

Race entry costs £3 and runners will be grouped into heats based on their expected time.
