Waste collection services across the district will be expanded, but workers will move to only working for four days a week.
Braintree Council wants to extend its food waste service to an extra 16,500 homes from September onwards.
But it also wants its staff to work longer hours over a period of four days, as opposed to a regular five-day working week.
Councillors have admitted that the change in policy means there is a greater risk of daily collection routes not being completed.
