The stories behind the ill-fated Hope diamond and the Taylor-Burton diamond were recounted to members when Peter Hering, from Cambridge jewellers Cellini, was guest speaker.

A cut diamond was shown and the audience was able to handle a yellow diamond ring and to guess its price. The winner was Cherry Smith, who was presented with a pearl bracelet for her correct guess of £16,000.

The business part of the meeting included a report on a visit to Clavering, where a guided tour of the historic church had been followed by tea and cakes.

The Institute’s annual donation of cakes for Radwinter Road Hospital had been gratefully received.

Mary Green’s gladiolus was flower of the month.
