A MAN has been fined for operating as an unlicensed scrap metal collector in the Braintree district.

The man, Mr Radu, was found to be running a mobile scrap metal business without the required licence.

He was stopped during a routine check in Halstead as part of Braintree Council’s Pride in our Neighbourhood day.

Toby Williams, councillor responsible for leisure and wellbeing at Braintree Council, said: "Thanks to the proactive work of our enforcement and licensing teams, we have successfully prosecuted someone operating without a scrap metal licence in our district.

"Residents should always check any waste collectors or scrap metal dealers are operating with a licence to ensure waste is disposed of responsibly and safely."

Officers from the council’s street scene enforcement and licensing teams, supported by Essex Police, stopped a Mercedes panel van on Colchester Road during the community initiative.

Mr Radu was found to be carrying on the business of a mobile scrap metal dealer without a licence.

He was prosecuted by the council and found guilty in his absence at Colchester Magistrates Court on Friday, August 21.

He was fined £660, given a victim surcharge of £264, and ordered to pay the council’s full costs of £2,347.37.
