Signs have gone up outside the front of a major mountaineering brand store in Colchester.
GO Outdoors, Sheepen Road Retail Park looks to be closing down with a sale underway.
The well-known brand has grown into one of the UK’s biggest names for outdoor gear, selling kit for everything from family camping trips to serious hiking.
It started as a single shop in Sheffield in 1969 and now has more than 120 stores plus a busy online operation, so its claim to be the country’s largest outdoor retailer is credible.
The chain focuses on offering a wide range at different price points.
Shoppers can pick from “good, better, best” versions of items for walking, camping, fishing, cycling, running and horse riding, with a membership card that gives access to lower prices.

Stores stock big brands as well as own‑label gear, and many now offer extra services such as bike repairs and boot fitting.
GO Outdoors was bought by JD Sports in 2017 and now sits alongside Blacks and Millets in the group’s outdoor arm, helping it secure better deals with suppliers and operate large, warehouse‑style stores for big purchases.
It also works with organisations including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Scouts, positioning itself as a supporter of youth adventure and the wider benefits of spending time outside, not just as another retailer.
